As I’ve said before – I am a total sucker for covers. Check out Yorn’s cover of New Order’s “Bizarre Love Triangle.” - Dead Man’s Bones – My Body’s a Zombie for You
OMG – as if I needed another reason to totally drool over Ryan Gossling. He acts, he makes beards ridiculously sexy and now he SINGS! Cool tidbit about the band – they find a children’s choir in each town they tour to do the background vocals. - The Big Pink – Dominos

Florence played in Brooklyn earlier this month, and I am still kicking myself for missing the show. I have a feeling this chica is incredible live. She has quite the voice. Take a listen to her most recent album, appropriately named “Lungs.” - Port O’Brien – I Woke Up Today

I saw Dawes open for Langhorne Slim earlier this month. They are good to listen to, but not so great to watch. The whole band makes really awkward “sex faces.” If you’ve ever seen John Mayer perform live you know exactly what I’m talking about. - The Magic Numbers – Mornings Eleven

- Bishop Allen – Rain
One of the best bands I’ve never heard of. The entire “Grrr…” album is a great listen from start to finish. Also, check out “Click, Click, Click, Click”, great song. You’ll be tapping your foot in no time. - Elizabeth & the Catapult – Taller Children
The first time I heard this song I was running on the track at McCarren Park and thought to myself “this song would be perfect as the opening credits for Will Farrell movie.” Just saw these guys last night at the Music Hall of Williamsburg. Their studio work does not do them justice. Elizabeth can fucking sing.

If you are thinking, who is Yim Yames, wonder no more. It’s an alias for Jim James; you know, that guy from My Morning Jacket. Anyway, this is off the “Tribute To” album which consists of six George Harrison covers. I’m ashamed to admit this in a public forum, but until recently I though this song way called “My Sweet Love.” DON”T JUDGE ME. (Kids, when your mom tells you to not listen to your headphones at full blast, do what she tells you. She knows what she is talking about.) - The Temper Trap – Sweet Disposition

This song repeats the same line over and over, yet it stays interesting enough to listen to for 3 minutes. - Tom Waits – Hoist That Rag
Critic Daniel Durchholz describes Waits voice as sounding, “like it was soaked in a vat of bourbon, left hanging in the smokehouse for a few months, and then taken outside and run over with a car.” So bascially, Tom Waits sounds like a pirate. There is something so incredibly sexy about this song. Maybe it’s just Waits? - Papercuts – You Can Have What You Want

I was checking out Spank Rock and suddenly this sassy little lady jumps on stage and oozed sex all over the stage. Also check out “Lemme Get Some”, listen for the Cool Kids cameo. - Spinnerette – Driving Song

Listen for the explosion about :30 seconds in. This is a remake of the Jackson 5 song. I would like to note that the inclusion of this song has nothing to do with the recent death of Michael Jackson. I just really f-ing like it. - All Time Low – Hello, Brooklyn

Off the “Dark Was the Night” compilation. The lyrics were actually written back in the mid ’70′s by Byrne, and the Durty Projects set them to a tune. I’ve always admired David Byrne’s work and recently became a big fan of the DPs, so it was like magic when I discovered this.Knotty Pine Lyrics:

This guy is an incredible talent. I had the pleasure of seeing him open for Josh Ritter earlier this month at the Vaudville Mews in Des Moines. He started playing and the room went silent. I’m still not 100% where or how I got my hands on this one, but it was one of those songs I heard and it immediately felt familiar. - Black Eyed Peas – Boom Boom Pow
This is July’s guilty pleasure, the song that I’m ashamed to say I can’t get enough of. If auto tune makes you sick, don’t touch this one with a 20 foot pole. I had to look up the lyrics, because at one point I thought I heard “Shittin’ on ya’ll you with the boom boom” and I thought to myself, that doesn’t even make sense. Turns out, I heard right. - Imogen Heap – First Train Home

Can’t get enough of Rye Rye. She’s the first artist to be signed to M.I.A’s N.E.E.T label. She’s working on a new album and collaborating with some big names. Keep your ears open for more from her in the next year. - Icarus Himself – Coffins
Icarus Himself is actually a fellow named Nick Whetro. As far as I can tell he is of no relation to Raab Himself from MTV’s Jackass. His most recent album, Coffins, was described by CokeMachineGlow as a “…lost Bowie demo tape overdubbed with acid confessions.” I think that pretty much sums it up.

I’ve been thinking how cool it would be to put together a festival called, “Bands Made of Brothers”. The bill would include the Doobie Brothers, The Avett Brothers, the Jonas Brothers, the Neville Brothers, and the Righteous Brothers. Brooks Brothers could sponsor it, and maybe they could put out a compilation album on Warner Bros. Records? - Yeah Yeah Yeahs - Zero
A couple weeks ago I was able to squeeze into an old dress that is the same size as this song. This song got stuck on my head, hence it’s inclusion on the playlist. I also think Karen O has some rockin’ bangs. - Safety Suit – Stay
These guys made a stop in Des Moines a few weeks ago to play Simon Estes Amphitheater as part of the Nitefall on the River concert series. They were also in the STAR studio for a live performance that afternoon. I fell in love with this song, and maybe the drummer too. - David Gray – As I’m Leaving
I studied abroad in London as a sophomore in college. One of my very dear friends gave me David Gray’s “Lost Songs” album and a card with the lyrics to this song. This album always comes back out any time a big change happens in my life. - Pete Yorn – Social Development Dance

Heard this song for the first time this past Friday during their show at Hoyt Sherman in Des Moines. The crowd was singing it right back to them. “Just do your best, it’s the only way to keep that last bit of sanity. Maybe I don’t have to be good, but I can try to be at least a little bit better than I’ve been so far.” - The Avett Brothers – Shame
Beautiful harmonies, and can you hear that banjo? Beautiful melody about those moments where you’d like to CTRL + Z the mistakes you’ve made with other people’s hearts. - Little Mojo – Stumbled
The band consists of two brothers, Josh & Nick Sinclair now known as Hollywood Burnout. I’ve been listening to them since high school. I have a feeling we will be hearing more from these guys very soon.
