Dr. Martens Celebrates 50 Years With The DM50 Cover Album

Dr. Martens Celebrates 50 Years With The DM50 Cover Album

I got my first pair of Dr. Martens when I was in 6th grade.  It was a really big deal, because they were like $100 – and I bought them with my own money.  They made my feet look enormous, because  at the time I was nothing but elbows and feet, but I wore them with pride.   When I first heard about the DM50 project I started thinking about the kind of music I associated with Dr. Martens, and of course my mind wandered back to the halls of my middle school.  During that ‘phase’ I was really into Meatloaf.  Luckily, you won’t find a cover of “I Would Do Anything For Love” on this album.

To celebrate their 50th anniversary Dr. Martens produced an album to represent the spirit of the people who’ve worn Dr. Martens over the years.  They asked ten artists to record covers of  classic songs, then ten directors produced videos to accompany the tracks.  All of the songs can be downloaded FOR FREE over at 50.drmartens.com.

Participating Artists Include:

My favorite so far is the Ravonettes cover of The Stone RosesI Wanna Be Adored“.

A.) I totally love Alexa Chung.  She seems like she’d be a lot of fun to hang out with.

B.) This whole thing was shot around and near my ‘hood.  As you can see, there are a lot of sweet vintage shops around here.

Great advice on vintage, “smell it, and don’t not wash it.”

In the spirit of anti-consumption a group of men and women have taken the Six Items or Less challenge.  Here is how it works – you select six items, (or less) from your wardrobe and commit to wearing only those items for a month.  This does not include underwear, bras, accessories or shoes.

Many of us, me included, have closets and dressers full of clothing that doesn’t get worn that often.  Heck, I have a closet full of clothes plus a couple overflowing dressers, AND a storage unit back home full of even more stuff.  The funny part is that it’s not like I’m some well dressed fashionista, these aren’t skirts and dresses that I’m hanging onto.  I have more hooded sweatshirts than a frat boy, and enough t-shirts to wear a different one everyday for a couple months, maybe more.

I know I’m not the only one that does this!  Why do we hold on to these items?  And why did we buy them in the first place?  Do we really NEED all this stuff?

Want to cut your clothing clutter?  Here are a couple things you can do:

Commit to quality over quantity.   In the past I have made many impulse purchases simply because an item was on sale.  I’ve also opted to shop at places like Forever 21 and H&M where the prices are low, and the quality is not always great.  In hindsight, I should have spent my money more wisely.  For every five items I’ve purchased at these stores or on sale, I could have invested in a higher quality piece that would’ve not only looked better, but lasted longer.

Invest in wardrobe multi-taskers.  Find items that are versatile.  Think about how the same piece can be dressed up or dressed down.  You can do wonders with accessories and shoes.

Clothing swaps.  Trade with friends when you get bored with an item.  This keeps your wardrobe fresh, saves money, and you aren’t contributing to consumption culture.

I’m not sure that I am ready for the Six Items or Less challenge quite yet, but the lessons I’ve learned from the men and women who partipated in this experiment have been eye-opening.  I’m going to try and think twice before I buy, and do more with less.

What about you?  Do you think you could do this challenge?  What six items would you choose?

How Do You Define Beauty?

How Do You Define Beauty?

When I first heard about Jessica Simpson’s new reality show on VH1, The Price of Beauty, I rolled my eyes, and thought, “here we go again.”  A camera crew following another drop dead gorgeous celebrity while she gets plucked and groomed into perfection while she tells us how hard it is to look good.  That was before I actually saw a clip of what the show was REALLY about.

During the show, Ms. Simpson and her two besties, hairdresser Ken, and bud CaCee travel the globe to show us how various cultures around the world define beauty.  It’s like a national geographic documentary, but with a darling goofy blonde girl and her two side kicks as commentators.

I think it’s VERY important to show people that there are many different ways to recognize beauty.  For instance, in the clip they show Ugandan brides-to-be who are exiled into a hut to “plump up” before their big day, because in their culture, big is beautiful.   In some countries women go to great lengths to lighten their skin, while in our country women get spray tans to achieve a bronzed appearance.  I find it fascinating to get all of the different perspectives, because it really makes me think about how I personally define beauty.

So how do I define beauty?  For me, it’s about who you are, and what your actions say about you.  Are you kind?  Are you good to people?  Are you loyal?  When someone possesses these qualities they are beautiful to me.   People are kind of like cake.  You can decorate a cake and make it look grand and beautiful, but it doesn’t mean that underneath all of that frosting the cake is going to taste good.

So what about you, how do you define beauty?
