Bacon Inspired Dinner: A Journey is Elegance
Posted on 03. Mar, 2009 by Karri Wells.
Cafe DiScala is a local Des Moines restaurant best known for it’s homemade italian dishes and Italian wedding cake. This past Wednesday, owner Tony Lemmo and head chef Phil Shires put a spin on things. Cafe DiScala hosted a five course bacon inspired dinner.
The highlight of the evening was the Pearl Vodka Candied Bacon Martini. If any of you scrunching your noses at this, STOP! It was a very tasty surprise. The bartender added a tiny bit of what tasted like maple syrup to the drink. It was like drinking a boozy pancake with a side of bacon.
I’ve posted photos from the first three courses, but unfortunately my camera died before I could get the last two. I had so much fun at the dinner, I really hope the guys do this again next year!

The Bacon Explosion
Posted on 01. Mar, 2009 by Karri Wells.
This weekend Des Moines held it’s 2nd Annual Blue Ribbon Bacon Festival. Unfortunately I was not one of 300 lucky ticket holders. So my friend and fellow bacon lover, Mitch, created the bacon wrapped sausage log in his kitchen.
When the Explosion first came out of the oven I was very wary. It looked intimidating, and I could feel myself getting heart burn just looking at. However, as soon as I tasted it for myself, it was love at first bite.
If you decide to take a stab at recreating this bacontastic concoction at home here are a few suggestions:
- Have candles on hand in order to de-bacon smell your home after the explosion has been enjoyed
- Fry the bacon for the middle of the explosion ahead of time
- The bacon explosion is complimented well with beer
- Barbecue sauce makes everything better
